OA PAIN STUDIES & GUIDELINES

Analgesic efficacy and safety of non-prescription doses of naproxen sodium in the management of moderate osteoarthritis of the knee or hip

This study showed that for the acute management of underlying pain in patients with moderate OA of the hip or knee, nonprescription naproxen sodium is effective and well tolerated in patients of all ages.

Comparison of the analgesic efficacy and safety of non-prescription doses of naproxen sodium and ibuprofen in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee

This study showed that over-the-counter doses of naproxen sodium (440 mg/660 mg) and ibuprofen (1200 mg) effectively relieve pain in patients with mild to moderate OA of the knee. Study was conducted over a 7-day period.

Analgesic efficacy and safety of non-prescription doses of naproxen sodium compared with acetaminophen in the treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee

This study showed nonprescription doses of naproxen sodium (440 mg/660 mg) and acetaminophen (4000 mg) effectively relieves pain and other symptoms of OA. Naproxen sodium is an alternative in the initial treatment of OA and may be preferred to acetaminophen as first-line therapy in patients with moderate or severe pain. Naproxen sodium and acetaminophen has similar safety profiles to placebo.

PRIMARY DYSMENORRHEA PAIN STUDY & GUIDELINES

Aleve® demonstrates more* pain relief than acetaminophen for menstrual cramps, study shows

*Based on clinical data from the first 6 hours after initial dosing.

In a clinical study, a single, maximum nonprescription dose of Aleve® (naproxen sodium) provided more pain relief over 12 hours than acetaminophen for menstrual cramps due to primary dysmenorrhea.

MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN STUDIES & GUIDELINES

Efficacy and safety of naproxen sodium vs. opioids for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain

Evidence from a review on efficacy and safety on naproxen sodium and certain opioids suggests that naproxen sodium has a favorable adverse event profile. Naproxen sodium can be used in many types of musculoskeletal pain besides OA.

SAFETY STUDIES & GUIDELINES

Safety of naproxen sodium compared with placebo, ibuprofen and acetaminophen: a pooled analysis of eight multiple-dose, short-term, randomized controlled studies

Short-term use of nonprescription doses of naproxen sodium results in a similar safety profile to placebo, regardless of the age of the population. The pooled analysis did not find an increased risk of adverse events with short-term use of nonprescription doses of naproxen sodium compared with placebo, or compared with other common analgesics.
